Banff is nestled in the Rocky Mountains, approximatly 110 kilometers from Calgary. At an elevation of 4,537 feet (1,383 metres), it is the highest town in Canada. With a population of only around 7,500 people, it remains a quaint escape from the hustle and bustle of big city life.

The name "Banff" is derived from Banffshire, Scotland, the birthplace of two of the original directors of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
The highest mountain in Banff National Park is Mt. Forbes which stands at 11,850 feet (3,612 metres).
Mountains in Banff National Park are 45 to 120 million years old.
More than 4,000,000 visitors travel to Banff National Park every year since 1996.
Banff was established in 1885 as Canada's first National Park (third in the world) and was the birth of Canada's vast national parks system.
Getting To Banff
Please note: A permit is required for all visitors to Banff National Park and is available at the park entry gates and visitor centresIf driving from Calgary to Banff, take the Trans-Canada Highway (also called Highway 1 as indicated on the map below) west to the Banff exit, and follow the signs a short distance to Banff townsite. Approximate distance from the Calgary International Airport to the Banff townsite is 145 km (90 miles). Allow 1.5 - 2 hours of driving time.
